The Challenge
To supply a full range of Digital TV and radio services to 150 flats in a single block owned by a London local authority.
The services required were all available Turkish programming via Turksat, all available European and ethnic programming via Eutelsat 13° east , all Sky Digital TV via Astra 28.2° and terrestrial TV and radio in both digital and analogue transmission formats.
The requirement: a TV distribution system capable of delivering all of the above to each flat enabling the resident to choose the services to suit and if required then purchase the relevant subscription package and receiver independently or choose just to continue to use the analogue terrestrial services while they continue operation.
The Solution – 13 Wire Integrated Reception System (IRS)
13 wire IRS backbone infrastructure connected to three satellite dish antennae. The 13 wire backbone was installed at roof level with 3 drop cables installed to each flat at the lounge location terminating with two outlet sockets.
Conclusion
13-wire IRS does not lend itself as a practical solution in some apartment block configurations, particularly tower blocks.
Low rise blocks with flat roofs are the more suitable as the bulk of the backbone cabling is installed at roof level. To determine the suitability of a block of flats a detailed site survey would need to be undertaken to identify cable routes and node positions before a 13 wire solution can be considered.
13 wire IRS is a solution providing a wide range of ethnic services successfully.
